Astrid & Edgar Cheylus bring the slopes alive

They share everything: the same name, the same love of skiing and especially of freeriding. And most of all, the same habit of winning competitions. Between them, the brother and sister have won 6 French championships and 3 European championships. When she was just 18, Astrid won the World Championship in 2021.

WHAT ARE HIS AND HER STRENGTHS IN FREERIDING?

Astrid: His style, a pure movement, originality, technique and commitment.

Edgar: : She has a vast amount of experience, perhaps more than many of her competitors. She is always solidly positioned onher feet, with a very strong technique when jumping barriers.

HIS AND HER FAVOURITE SPOT IN LA CLUSAZ WHEN THEY NEED A BIT OF SPACE?

Astrid: I’d say it’s Balme, even though we all have our own little secret spots!

Edgar: She loves Le Fernuy. She makes one or two big jumps at the top, continues with wide turns and then moves towards the pine trees at Mach 12.

THE SPORT THEY PREFER TO PLAY TOGETHER?

Astrid: Surfing. We spend the summer together at the sea, motivating and helping each other.

Edgar: Yes, surfing! We take on a wave in turns, and then meet up at the LineUp, just to have a chat and speak about our exploits on the previous wave, as we wait for the next one.

THE SPORT OR ACTIVITY HE/SHE DREAMS OF TRYING?

Astrid: Paragliding. Edgar would love to fly in the mountains around here

Edgar: Maybe boxing. She loves it when people are hard on her and there’s a fight!

THE COUNTRY WHERE HE/SHE WOULD LOVE TO GO?

Astrid: Hawaii. To go surfing, but most of all to meet the great shapers who make surfboards

Edgar: Canada. The chance to enjoy some great underwater dives in the morning in the Canadian pillow-lines and share it all with her great idol, the freeskier Tatum Monod.

WHAT WOULD HE/SHE LIKE TO DO OUTSIDE OF SPORT?

Astrid: To create his own surfboards, to work in art and design in his own way.

Edgar: To work in events planning. She likes human contact and seeing friends to have a laugh together. So if one day she follows in the footsteps of Gaylord Pedretti or Julie Arbeit, she’ll do it with all her energy to make sure that festivalgoers have a really festive weekend.

TO CONCLUDE, COULD YOU SUM EACH OTHER UP IN A PHRASE?

Astrid:  A very handsome, incredibly attentive guy, who is adorable with everyone and does everything with all his heart.

Edgar: A very pretty and gifted woman, very combative and sometimes a bit of a pain!

She rarely makes snowmen when she's up in the mountains. Juliane has begun promoting Shadow: an off-piste skiing film with inspirational images, a real declaration of love for the mountains, but most of all to all for women who adore wide-open spaces, untouched slopes and freedom.
