Juliane Grosdidier: From shadow to light

Publication date 1 December 2021,
She rarely makes snowmen when she's up in the mountains. Juliane has begun promoting Shadow: an off-piste skiing film with inspirational images, a real declaration of love for the mountains, but most of all to all for women who adore wide-open spaces, untouched slopes and freedom.
HOW DID YOU COME TO MAKE SHADOW?
I wanted to highlight «women in the shadows», hence the title of the film. Five women from different generations, who all love the mountains, who experience skiing or snowboarding with all their heart and soul without any intermediaries.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE ARAVIS MOUNTAINS?
It’s an incredible region for lovers of the mountains, with uniquely diverse landscapes and multifaceted mountain ranges. There are plenty of places accessible to everyone, as well as challenging and even extreme spots for skiers.

HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THE FILM LOCATIONS?
We listed around a dozen favourite sites, including mountain faces, passes and summits. Then I did over 30 location-scouting trips, and we made the film with three cameramen, between December 2020 and May 2021. We had to adapt to everyone’s schedule and to the weather, but also to ski-lift closures. We had to go up everywhere on foot.

WHICH SEQUENCE HAD THE BIGGEST IMPACT ON YOU?
The biggest impact in terms of adrenalin was in the sequence with a run on the Tables de Borderan. We almost cancelled it because of the wind, but the women turned into war machines! They went up the mountain ridges using ice axes like warriors. From below, we saw two dots moving along to the top of the mountain face. The cross-country skiers stopped to watch the scene and clapped. It was a unique moment.

THE FILM ALSO SHOWS THE DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED DURING SHOOTING.
Yes, because I wanted to reflect the reality of what really happens in the mountains. Most films about skiing only include beautiful, perfectly framed pictures, a blue sky and glistening snow. Our film has them, too, but I also wanted to show everything the riders were faced with: the risks,
the unexpected events, the complicated U-turns, the bad weather conditions…

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE VIEWERS TO TAKE OUT OF SHADOW?
I’d like them to see themselves in the film. I want them to say: «It’s us, we experience the same thing!» And also that you don’t need to be famous to do what you love doing with an authentic spirit.
